Product Spotlight: Moyno Augmentor Progressive Cavity Pump

  • Reconditioning
This is the second article in a series highlighting equipment from the Zwirner Equipment Company inventory. This week, we look at the Moyno Augmentor Progressive Cavity Pump, a positive displacement type pump primarily utilized for processing high-viscous fluids. The pump transfers fluids via multiple fixed discrete cavities through the pump.  This pump is known by multiple names, including cavity pumps, progressing cavity pumps, PC Pumps, progressive cavity screw pumps, or eccentric screw pumps. This type of pump is a highly versatile piece of equipment utilized for several applications – typically processing abrasive, high-viscous fluids.

How a Progressive Cavity Pump Works

Progressive cavity pumps are comprised of a helical rotor and a twin helix stator. Fluid travels through the inlet suction nozzle to enter the pump and is then fed into the helical rotor and stator casing assembly. When the rotor spins and makes contact with the surface of the stator, a series of small, sealed cavities are created. The pumping fluid progresses through these cavities and is ultimately expelled through the outlet.  Progressive cavity pumps cannot operate without a viscous fluid, as the generated heat is likely to cause the pump to fail.

Progressive Cavity Pumps: Applications

Progressing cavity pumps are utilized in applications requiring handling high-viscous fluids and slurries. These may include the pumping of :
  • Sewage and sludge
  • Oil
  • Cement or grout
  • Food and beverages
  • Coal and mining slurry
  • Limited energy well water
  • Viscous chemicals
  • Cosmetics, creams and lotions
  • Marine diesel fuel
  • Lubrication oil
These pumps are also utilized for additional applications, including:
  • Stormflow screening
  • Transferring varnish and paint
  • Oilfield directional drilling
  • Transferring shear-sensitive fruits and vegetables
Did You Know? Progressive cavity pumps are used in various industries, including wastewater and sewage treatment, oil and petroleum, chemical manufacturing, food and beverage and pulp and paper.

Advantages of Progressive Cavity Pumps

Self-priming progressive cavity pumps are suitable for processing solids and other difficult mediums. They can easily handle multi-phase fluids, air-entrained fluids, and abrasive fluids. Other benefits of a progressive cavity pump include:
  • Accurate precision in dosing and metering.
  • Continuous low pulsation flow.
  • No vapor locks.
  • High suction capability.
  • Quiet operation.
  • Vertical operation.
However, it is important to note that these pumps cannot run dry, they move slowly with lower flow rates, and they have a limited distance capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can progressive cavity pumps pump water? Progressive cavity pumps work best for sheer sensitive and highly viscous liquids and are generally not utilized for less viscous liquids like water. Are progressive cavity pumps reversible? PC pumps operate efficiently in either direction. How do you prime a progressive cavity pump? Progressive cavity pumps are typically self-priming.
